The war on health doesn’t have to be expensive. Conemaugh’s Community Health was involved with a program called Walkworks that promotes the inexpensive exercise of “WALKING”. We have outlined safe walking trails in all parts of Cambria County that include:

  • Roxbury Park
  • Eighth Ward
  • Sandyvale Cemetery
  • Downtown Johnstown
  • Cambria City
  • Ghost Town Trail starting at Young Peoples Community Center
  • Saint Francis University
  • University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

A map of each trail can be found on the WalkWorks website www.pawalkworks.com. It highlights the historic landmarks along each trail and measures between one and three miles. Look for signs posted at each location. While these sites are great places to walk, remember you can walk anywhere, any time for as long as you want. Find a friend and walk in your neighborhood, walk while the kids practice soccer or baseball. The important thing is to keep moving. Walking for exercise manages your weight, lowers your blood pressure and relieves stress.   Start out slow and see where you can go. Increase your pace or your length of time. Remember, with walking there are no rules and no charge. It’s free and the best way to fight the war on health.

Wellness Program is an incentive/reward web based program.  It can be accessed anywhere, any time.  Once enrolled, participants can select from an array of health-related activities.  These activities can range from walking, jogging, training for marathons and participation in healthy eating/nutrition to competitive sports programs.  Participants will receive a pedometer to measure steps.  Each participants will be responsible to log into the web and input their data..  There will be a range and point value of each activity established, and the participant can select/complete each activity to accumulate points.  As points are achieved, they can be exchanged for gift cards and prizes correlating to the level(s) achieved.
